Der Brite gilt als einer der einflußreichsten Autoren des Fantasy-Genres und ist mit seinen unzähligen Veröffentlichung in jeder Kategorie vertreten. Schon mit 15 Jahren arbeitete er beim Tarzan Magazine mit, verkaufte danach Kurzgeschichten an verschiedene Fantasy- und SF-Magazine - in dieser Zeit entstand sein Konzept vom ewigen Helden, das sich in den meisten seiner Bücher niedergeschlagen hat. Eine Reinkarnation dieses ewigen Helden ist Elric, Moorcocks wohl berühmteste Figur. Im Folgenden übernahm er die Zeitschrift New Worlds, wandte sich aber vor allem in den 80ern der Fantasy etwas ab - wenn auch nicht ganz: aktuell stehen weitere Fortsetzungen der Elric-Romane auf dem Plan.
